A trip to South Western Australia recently highlighted the nutritional disadvantage of being a kid eating out. At two separate restaurants we were provided with menus for the children. There was an embarrassingly meagre choice of plain spaghetti with melted cheese and tomato sauce or a monster serve of pie and chips. The amount of calories in these meals is massive whilst the nutrition is grossly poor. Little bodies and brains are being starved of nutrition and young livers are being fattened up.

REMOVE THE JUNK – ADD MORE CHOICES
We need more choices. As parents we must teach our children what is healthy and importantly, lead by example.if it’s not good for YOU then it certainly isn’t good for growing bodies.
HELP KIDS GROWING BRAINS
While on the subject of nutrition, do not underestimate the benefit of a supportive children’s multivitamin, particularly one such as Multi Care for Kids. This provides therapeutic levels of antioxidants, B vitamins and minerals in a tasty orange flavoured powder. Growing children need our love, guidance and support, plenty of exercise and sleep and a great diet. Adding a multi vitamin can reduce the incidence of essential micro nutrient deficiencies, helping them to meet the daily needs of growing brains, bones and immune systems.

Hi Jeremy,
Thanks for reminding us of the importance of good nutrition for kids. My wife and I believes in both healthy and tasty food are important not only for adults but also for the kids. Now the the school holidays in approaching. I’m thinking of doing more activities like exercising with my kids. That would be a useful way of spending time with them.

Hi Jeremy, I agree with the need to provide nutritional meals for our kids. I feel guilty because sometimes I undermine my wife’s efforts by purchasing snacks and cookies. It’s easy to blame it on the fact that we both like this junk, but the kids were doing much better when we reduced the high fructose corn syrup, sodium-laden and nitrite-riddled foods.
On the subject of multi-vitamins, I never know whether to accept or reject the claims of benefits or the toxicity scares. (My wife recently told me about something she’d read concerning vitamin D.) This all baffles me – drink milk, don’t drink milk; sugar is good, sugar is bad, caffeine…arrgh!
I used to take mega-doses (in my mind) of vitamin C because Linus Pauling thought it was a good idea. I still caught colds. Then, I stopped. I still caught colds. But I have $7.00 more in my pocket LOL.
Cheers,
Mitch

Hi Jezz,
Yep nutrition nutrition and I’m a firm believer that with all the farming we have done of our land that there is no way we would be getting enough nutrients naturally so a multivitamin is essential….Remember we bought Angus to you as a toddler and you prescribed an immune booster plan well he has had less than one sick day per year since, and Oscar who is now over 4 has never been to a doctor, never had antibiotics, they do not get so much as a sniffle and personally i’m not far behind them. We all take a good quality practioner multivit and we eat lots of Fruit and Veg and get lots of excercise outdoors….I’m sure other mums around here are sick (haha..) of hearing me harp on about how healthy my kids are when theirs are always at the doctor, I’m sure i have saved alot of money overall on doctors appointments and visits to the pharmacy…we go there to buy gifts only…. Well done on your success in this field we for one are very greatful for your advice Cheers Ley & boys
I always enjoy reading your articles Jeremy Hill.
Hi Mitch, Your concerns about vitamin C are understandable. I found that it prevented me getting sick at work. If one of my colleagues had a cold, I took a daily vitamin C tablet until several days after my colleage lost his or her cold symptoms. This still saves me money, except when my workmates are sick. However, with far fewer colds I am more productive, enjoy my life more and less colds are spread to others. I have always found Jeremy’s suggestions for leading a healthy lifestyle helpful.
Cheers,
Frank
Hi Frank, Saturday afternoon Perth, just settling down to some blog surfing and saw your reply to Mitch. Very timely for me. Am here with the first symptoms of cold, thinking I’ll do something about it later. Now am off to find a pharmacy as catching these things in time matters! Thanks for the reminder.

HiJeremy & Julia
Important topic. My friend who has 2 young children cooks everything herself, including treats like cookies as then she knows what goes in them. They only know healthy so she is laying down a good foundation for them, just like her Mother did for her.
How sad that some restaurants are neglecting this fact that children need both a nutritious and healthy diet. Makes it difficult especially if you eat healthy at home!
I usually stick with salads or ask for extra vegetables if I go out to eat as I notice in many restaurants they are quite frugal in that department.

Hi Frank, thanks for sharing your practical use for vitamin C. I’m smiling because, since I left the rat race and we’ve been homeschooling our kids, there have been virtually no colds. I think it’s only when we venture out to the human hive “malls, supermarkets” that opportunistic viruses attack.
Which leads to another topic: bleach and hand sanitizers. Are we weakening our offspring’s resistance to bugs by over-sanitizing everything? I know these companies (especially Clorox) need to boost sales as their core products become marginalized.
Cheers,
Mitch

Hi everybody,
Today I’ve been reading the book the Brain that changes itself by Dr Norman Doldge. It’s an amazing book and I highly recommend it. Taking about virus and sanitizers etc, there are people who’ve developed Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) about it. The books explains the cause and presents some solutions.
Julia, Jeremy, you can reply even before your gravatar is ready, because once it’s ready, your picture will “magically” appear next to your comment.

Thanks Ben,
When only 70% of toddlers in the US are eating a recognisable vegetable per day, and that vegetable is usually in chip-form, it is nice to hear there are families such as yours who are prioritising nutrition.
Enjoy the holiday time with your family.
Kind regards, Jeremy.
Hi Mitch,
we are currently growing 53 different types of edible veg, fruit, berries and herbs in the back yard. The kids love their edible garden and enjoy making up their own dishes for the family and unsuspecting guests.
Good health, Jeremy.
Hi Ley,
so glad to hear from you and that you and the boys are doing so well. Hope the Christmas party was a hoot – I’ve no doubt it was.
Take care,
Jeremy.
Thanks Jodie,

Hi Patricia,
the most important topic isn’t it. Quality education is extremely important, but if we really want to be a smart country then we also really need to focus on how well we are feeding the developing brains of our children.
Keep up the great work.
Kind regards,
Jeremy
Hi Mitch,
thanks for your patience. Hope I’m up and running okay – I’m a newbie at this.
Cheers,
Jeremy
Nice to have you visit Patricia. Eating out and eating healthy is a challenge – how many times has a fresh salad come with an unexpected oily dressing or fried croutons? If you want to be vegetarian you’re often stuck with melted cheese over a vegetable. Pulses are an unknown unless you’re in an Indian restaurant.
The only way we’ll effect change is by asking for something different, and all too often it is easier to just go with what’s on the menu.
There are so many other factors that come to play when taking children out – the kids WANT to go to the fast food chains – no surprise – they get toys and treats.
I overheard a father ordering a fine steak for his 3 yr old. I shuddered at the thought of the little kid’s digestive system coping with it.

Hi Mitch,
Advise me please – should it have been RSS and does this mean it’s not working properly? I hope RSS hasn’t eaten my computer’s brain.
I didn’t realise you were permitted to homeschool your children in USA – most of the younger members of our extended family do homeschooling and I thought that was pretty unusual.
Chlorox? Hand sanitisers? You can replace most household chemicals with eucalyptus oil or bicarb (not forgetting lavender inside cupboards!). Bleach fumes are poisonous. Hand sanitisers are everywhere.
So many poisons = so many cancers.
I can swap health directions for blogging advice any time !
Am delighted you came.

Hey Jeremy, I can’t believe that was all they had on the menu for kids. They must have been pretty poor excuse for restaurants.
Naturally when eating out it can be a pain choosing the right meal for kids, especially if they’re fussy eaters.
As to vitamins, would you say that the only reason for their necessity is because out foods are so over processed, leaching all the nutrients from them? You would think as long as they ate all the right portions of the food groups that they would get more than enough of their daily vitamin intake?

Great post, and this is super important information. I especially liked this. “If it’s not good for YOU then it certainly isn’t good for growing bodies.” SO TRUE. I feel so bad when I see unhealthy kids because I know it’s not their fault, it’s their parents’ fault.
Thanks for the post, Jeremy.

Hi Sire,
Many foods are indeed well below the micro-nutrient levels that were found in the same foods just a few decades ago. This is one of the reasons for the greater need for nutritional support many people have, despite their supposedly balanced diet. A Harvard report was published in JAMA in 2002 which suggested that it appears prudent for all adults to supplement a good diet with a quality multivitamin. I’m covering my well-fed bases with supplementation.
Thanks,
Jeremy.
Thanks Tristan,
I hope you have developed a standing work station to do your blogging from as sitting is inflammatory and research shows that just one day sitting without associated caloric reduction can decrease your insulin receptor activity by a whopping 39%. Now that is a real cause for concern, given that insulin resistance is associated with the onset of metabolic diseases like diabetes, obesity, hypertension and many other problems including dementia. Scary huh (quick, stand up and start jogging on the spot).
All the best,
Jeremy. http://www.esshealth.com.au
