Ecotect Architects – solar passive design

Living the solar passive lifestyle in our residence and our serviced office – each design created by Ecotect Architects.

Cottesloe Beach on a beautiful spring morning – how lucky we are to live here ! Judging from the strength of the sun today, summer can’t be too far behind.

Solar passive house, Cottesloe

It always surprises me just how long winter lasts. We think of ourselves as living in a hot country and forget that our temperatures can drop to zero in the middle of winter. Remember the hailstorms ?

Our house is solar passive – we rely on the sun to warm it during the day and then expect  the walls and floors re-emit that warmth during the night. Designed by local  firm Ecotect Architects in 2005, the house continues to work to our highest expectations. It is always cosy in winter and comfortably cool in summer, without air-conditioning.

The sun pergola on the deck allows winter sun through the windows  downstairs and the warm rays filter through the ceiling skylights upstairs.  All of this reverses in summer when we want to exclude the hot sun from the house. So simple -  So clever!

We can look forward to another summer without worrying about the heat.  Having a purpose built solar passive house is the best way to go, but it’s not to late – you can have your home or office  retro-fitted to save energy and increase temperature comfort.

  1. Yes you are right. We are blessed to live in this place. I love Cottesloe beach although as I have gotten older don’t visit there so much as live south of the river. When I was a young nurse at RPH I used to go down there for a swimm beofre a late shift. Thanks for your info on the lavender products you use. I am going to a business fair this weekend and will hopefully source some quality lavender products for my readers. There have been quite a few who have been asking about them.

  2. Thanks Patricia – it’s all too easy to take it for granted. when I pick up tweets on #Cottesloe it is almost always about the beach.
The beautiful ocean was choppy this morning so I shelved the idea of a cold swim.
Hope you found some quality products – I checked the Farmers Market for you this morning but the lavender farm people were not there. Julia

  3. A passive solar home uses intelligent design to reduce the need for expensive heating & cooling appliances. This eliminates appliance running costs and drastically cuts down your energy bills.

  4. Hi
Nice surprise to see you here. You have a great website. Stimulating images. Fabulous designs.
we are just entering our winter season, so the blinds need to be pulled at night, but the house remains warm and cosy. I wish more people could appreciate the benefits of a passive solar design.
Ours was designed by my husband Garry Baverstock at http://ecotect-architects.com
