Earthcarers Swanbourne courses

Who could resist this little guy – this baby hedgehog has been on my desktop for a while, and here’s a chance to show him off.

Caring for the earth helps keep habitat safe for little creatures like this.  Caring for our earth is for all of us share in.  But we need a little help sometimes – how to do it – how to enrich our soil, grow organic vegetables, dispose of our waste, recycle, use less…..

When I came to Perth in 1995 I was puzzled why my  plants wouldn’t grow.  I hadn’t had a garden in 25 years and the harsh summer in Western Australia confounded me, as did the slaters, the snails and the sandy soil.  Lucky for me I happened into a Community Garden Centre with my problems  - instead of selling me what I thought I wanted, they encouraged me to join a permaculture course and within a short time I was up to speed with composting and worm farms.

When I had a worm farm the most fun I had with it was to show it to visiting children, dig my hands into the compost and bring out an armful of wriggling worms, often in the form of slithering cables and knots. The kids loved it  - and for a short time I was ‘cool’. When people asked me if I had pets, I replied ‘worms’.  [They're not high maintenance and they look after themselves when you travel.]

  1. Hi Julia
Thanks for stopping by and taking time to comment on my blog. I have been building a lovely blogging community around me and my next step is to monetize my blog. I have sourced some beautiful lavender products from a local lavender farm; after talking with them at a trade fair so that is my next big project. Really looking forward to doing product reviews and trying them all out. I love the idea of the project you mention in this post. More and more people are looking to garden in an organic and eco-friendly way which is great. Love the hedgehog by the way. Have you seen our Aussie equivalent the echidna by any chance. They are cute too :-)

  2. Hi Patricia – thanks for your comments. The echidna is my very favorite Australian native animal – not only beautiful but they walk with such “attitude” like they have all the time in the world and are infinitely superior to any human being standing watching them. Look forward to reading more about your products. Julia
